History of WHQ

Institutional and Editorial History

The Western Historical Quarterly (WHQ), founded in 1969, with the first volume published in 1970, is the peer-reviewed journal of the Western History Association (WHA), founded in 1961.

The Editors

The WHQ began in 1969 at Utah State University, not quite a decade after the founding of the WHA. Utah State published the journal for nearly fifty years before it relocated to the University of Oklahoma in 2016. With the move of the journal, Oxford University Press took over print and digital production. After a decade at the University of Oklahoma, in 2025 the WHQ moved to Colorado State University. Oxford University Press continues to produce the print and digital versions of the journal.

Former WHQ Editor David Rich Lewis chronicled the editors at Utah State University in his article “Forty-Seven Years: An Editor’s Report and Inventory,” featured in Volume 46, Issue 4 in 2015.

The American West and CSU

At CSU, the journal sits within a landscape devoted to the history of the American West. Since 1972, the History Department has hosted the American West Program, a public-facing program that has historically highlighted current scholarship in the field with strong connections to the Western Historical Association.

The WHQ has a long history of supporting the training of graduate students in Western history. Many of the editorial fellows have become leading scholars in the field. Donors, particularly long-time WHA members, have contributed generously to the named fellowships.

The Editoral Boards

Each volume of the WHQ has a dedicated editorial board of twelve members who volunteer their time in support of the journal and its success. Editorial board members advise the editors and provide support by engaging in the review process. The WHQ editor selects the journal’s editorial board from a slate of candidates approved by the Western History Association’s Council. Editorial board members serve in cohorts of four for a three-year term. Editorial board members are expected to attend the Board of Editors Meeting at the WHA annual conference. Editorial boards are listed by volume.
